Judges have accepted the proposal from prosecutors at the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Court of Appeal Iași and have ordered the 30-day remand in custody of Ionuț Alexandru Toader, according to Cotidianul.ro. He is a university lecturer at the Faculty of Law at "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iași and a public notary.
Ionuț Alexandru Toader is being investigated for rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and abuse of office for sexual purposes. The allegations concern, according to investigators, several female students of the faculty.
The court's decision came a day after prosecutors ordered his detention and requested his remand in custody. Investigators claim that the suspicions refer to actions carried out through exploitation of the authority conferred by his teaching position and position of superiority over the students involved. Prosecutors consider the measure necessary for the proper conduct of the investigation.
The case came to light following allegations made by former students of the Faculty of Law in Iași, who claimed that the lecturer had made proposals with sexual connotations to them within academic relations. After the information appeared in the public domain, the police opened an investigation, with the file later being taken over by prosecutors.
The scandal has generated public reactions, including from his father, former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader. "This is an attack against me, striking at Alexandru! Previously, since he has been a teaching staff member at the Faculty of Law, there have been several episodes of attack against him", he wrote on his Facebook page.
Ionuț Alexandru Toader is the son of the former Justice Minister and benefits from the presumption of innocence until a final court judgment is delivered. Remand in custody does not equate to a conviction.
