Law lecturer in Iași arrested on sexual assault charges against students

Alexandru Toader, son of former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader and lecturer at the Faculty of Law in Iași, has been remanded in custody for 30 days. The decision was issued Saturday morning by magistrates of the Iași Court of Appeal, according to spotmedia.ro.

The Prosecutor's Office attached to the Iași Court of Appeal announced that Alexandru Toader is under investigation for rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, and misuse of office for sexual purposes.

"Based on the evidence gathered so far, reasonable suspicion has emerged that the defendant, exploiting the authority conferred by his teaching position and position of superiority in relation to the students, would have committed the acts which form the subject of this case", the prosecutors stated in a communication.

Public accusations and internal investigation

The case became public in November 2025, when two former students openly accused the lecturer of making sexual advances towards them. According to their statements, Alexandru Toader allegedly approached them after they failed their exam in the first session.

"If you want to continue in this career, there are some sacrifices to make. You can't learn anything anyway, you're emotional, you're too emotional, you're even doing therapy about it. But why pay for therapy? The solution is to have sex with me", one student reported to journalists from Reporter de Iași. The young woman specified that she later withdrew from the Faculty of Law and is currently completing another university specialisation.

The two students claimed that they were not the only victims and that there were similar cases within the faculty. Alexandru Toader refused to comment on the accusations at the time they became public.

The university's Ethics Commission opened an investigation, and the Faculty of Law Council recommended unanimously that the lecturer should not teach until the situation was clarified.

Reaction of former minister Tudorel Toader

Tudorel Toader was present Friday evening at the Iași Court of Appeal headquarters, where the court was to rule on the arrest warrant for his son. The hearing lasted almost three hours, and afterwards the former minister refused to make any statements. Visibly distressed, he got into a car accompanied by other family members, according to News.ro.

Previously, on Facebook, Tudorel Toader argued that the entire case had been orchestrated by a lawyer with criminal charges, who sought to "ease" her legal situation.

"This is an attack on me, striking at Alexandru! A lawyer with criminal charges, seeking to ease her legal situation, 'motivated' two students to give unfavourable statements about him, sent a journalist to record them, resulting in a news story at national level, attached to my name, and finally, the ex officio referral of this criminal case", the former minister wrote.

Toader added that his son "without evidence and through intimidation" had been deprived of his liberty, in circumstances where "he did not know any of the charges brought, had no role in the case, had no opportunity to propose evidence in his defence". He expressed his belief that magistrates "will establish this abuse and will release him", thus giving him the opportunity to mount a defence.

The former minister also noted that Alexandru Toader is the father of two children, "one of whom is only a few weeks old".
