University lecturer from Iași, son of former minister Tudorel Toader, detained for rape

Ionuț Alexandru Toader, lecturer at the Faculty of Law of "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iași and notary public, was detained on Friday, 23 October, in a criminal case concerning allegations of rape and sexual assault. According to tvrinfo.ro, prosecutors from the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Iași Court of Appeal are requesting his preventive arrest for 30 days.

Two former students from the Faculty of Law in Iași have accused Alexandru Toader of abusive sexual behaviour. The prosecutor's statement specifies that the investigation concerns the offences of rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, and misuse of office for sexual purposes.

"Based on the evidence administered so far, a reasonable suspicion has resulted that the accused, taking advantage of the authority conferred by his teaching position and his position of superiority in relation to the students, would have committed the acts that constitute the subject of this case," prosecutors stated in the cited statement.

Press revelations, starting point of the investigation

The allegations became public in November 2025, after the publication Reporter de Iași presented the accounts of the two former students. The young women claimed that the professor had made sexual advances to them in connection with exam passes. One of them stated that she had maintained intimate relations with him even in his office at the university.

The revelations prompted police in Iași to take official action and open a criminal case. According to Ziarul de Iași, which cites judicial sources, Alexandru Toader was to be presented on Saturday before the court, which will decide whether to admit the proposal for preventive arrest.

The prosecutors also specify that the proposal is to be decided by the judge of rights and freedoms within the Iași Court of Appeal, the court competent in light of the accused's status as a notary.

Tudorel Toader denies and speaks of a political attack

Alexandru Toader is the son of former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader. Immediately after his son's detention, the former minister posted a message on Facebook on Friday questioning the motives behind the allegations.

"This is an attack on me, striking at Alexandru! Previously, since he has been a teaching staff member at the Faculty of Law, there have been several episodes of attack against him. This time, a lawyer with criminal cases, seeking to ease her legal situation, motivated two students to give unfavourable statements about him, sent a journalist to record them, which resulted in a press story at national level, attached to my name, and finally, the official report in this criminal case," wrote Tudorel Toader.

The former minister did not reveal the identity of the lawyer he was referring to and did not present in his message any evidence to support the accusations he made against her.
