Man arrested and remanded in custody after repeated harassment on Blue and Pink Express

A 25-year-old man is remanded in custody on probable cause, suspected of eight counts of sexual harassment or harassment on the Blue and Pink Express bus lines in the Stockholm area. This is reported by mitti.se with reference to Göteborgs-Posten.

Reports began coming in to the police in mid-September, when several women – many of them young – stated that they had been subjected to unwanted contact by the same man on board the buses. On 10 October, the man was arrested after yet another woman was sexually harassed on Pink Express and called the police.

– He has approached people on the bus and there have been unwanted contacts. That's essentially the common modus operandi, says chief prosecutor Moa Widjer to GP.

Charges are to be brought within two weeks. The chief prosecutor states that custodial sentences could be relevant, not least given that several of the complainants are very young – something that also motivated the remand in custody decision.

The incidents have attracted significant attention on social media, where images of the suspect have among other things been circulated in Facebook groups with thousands of members. However, Ängla Eklund, lawyer and chair of the Institute for Law and the Internet, warns that the circulation itself could be criminal.

For Dagens Nyheter, Eklund explains that the defamation provision in Swedish law does not in the first instance take into account whether a claim about a person is true or false.

– It does not matter if you think you have a legitimate interest in warning others. As a citizen, you do not have that responsibility, or that function in society, she says to DN.
