25-year-old remanded in custody for knife murder of his father in Västerås

A 25-year-old man has been remanded in custody on suspicion of murdering his father, a man in his 60s, following a knife attack in a flat in Västerås. TV4.se reports that the son has admitted that there is probable cause for murder.

Police were alerted early in the morning of 8 September about an injured person in the flat. When patrols and ambulance personnel arrived, it was established that the man in his 60s was dead. According to information given to TV4 Nyheterna, he had been stabbed.

A 25-year-old man was found at the scene and was immediately arrested on suspicion of murder.

"What we can say is that we view this as an isolated incident. Both the suspect and the deceased are people who knew each other previously. We suspect no connection to any criminal milieu," said Magnus Jansson Klarin, police press officer, following the operation.

On Thursday afternoon, the man was remanded in custody by Västmanland District Court.

"At the hearing, the suspect admitted that there is probable cause for murder and the district court remanded him in custody for it," says deputy public prosecutor Ewa Henriksson, who is leading the preliminary investigation.

Henriksson was unwilling to confirm that the victim is the father of the man in custody. The prosecutor also states that the exact time of the murder has not yet been established.

"We suspect it occurred sometime between 7 and 8 September. Police arrived at the scene early in the morning of 8 September following an emergency call, but I cannot provide more detailed information about that," says Ewa Henriksson.

The investigation is at an early stage. The prosecutor states that a crime scene examination has been initiated and is to be completed, that a post-mortem examination will be carried out, and that further interviews are to be conducted – both with the man in custody and with other persons.

According to information given to TV4 Nyheterna, the murder suspect has previously been convicted of several crimes. His solicitor has chosen not to comment on the matter.
