Police Officer in Västernorrland Charged with Unauthorised Searches in Police System
A police officer in Västernorrland has been charged with data breach, reports svt.se. According to the prosecutor, the accused is alleged to have carried out a total of 13 searches in the police data system during autumn 2025 – not for official reasons, but driven by personal and private interests.
Chief Prosecutor Camilla Ström at the special prosecution chamber, who led the preliminary investigation and brought the charges, writes in the charge sheet that the measures "were not necessary for the performance of any work task". Instead, they are alleged to have been prompted by the suspect's "personal and private interest in the contents of and handling of the cases that the searches concerned".
Ström assesses that the actions constitute "an unauthorised measure in the Police's crime prevention activities as a result of bias pursuant to section 7, first paragraph of the Police Act", and that they were committed intentionally.
The 13 searches were carried out over a period of several weeks during autumn 2025.
The charged police officer denies all accusations and denies having committed any crime.
The prosecutor has called as witnesses a colleague of the accused and a prosecutor who led the preliminary investigation in the case where the police officer is alleged to have carried out the searches.
