Melvin Rivera, 46, has been charged with the murder of his longtime partner Maria Pagan, 48, following his arrest over the weekend, 6abc.com reports.

Pagan was discovered dead inside her home on the 1200 block of West Erie Avenue in North Philadelphia last Thursday. Investigators determined she died from blunt force trauma. According to officials, Pagan had a disability and was lying in her hospital bed at the time of the attack.

Police have not released details regarding a motive. Rivera was denied bail and is currently held at Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 15.

The killing occurred amid an ongoing campaign against domestic violence in Philadelphia. The organisation Women Against Abuse is set to hold a rally and resource fair at the City Hall Courtyard on Wednesday afternoon, as part of the 19th annual iPledge Campaign.
