A young woman shot and killed a masked intruder who broke into her apartment in Philadelphia's Frankford neighbourhood on Wednesday morning, abc7chicago.com reports.

The shooting took place at around 5 a.m. on the 4600-block of Castor Avenue. Officers arriving at the scene found a 29-year-old man shot in the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman told police she heard someone breaking windows before encountering the masked man inside her apartment. Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department described how the intruder gained entry: "It appears this individual broke the window, and was able to reach in and open the door, and then entered this woman's apartment and that's when the shot — or shots — were fired."

Once investigators removed the man's mask, the woman recognised him, informing police they had a prior relationship. The exact nature of that relationship has not been disclosed.

Small said the man did not appear to have been carrying any weapons. The woman is cooperating with investigators and handed over a semi-automatic handgun to officers.

Homicide detectives are interviewing the woman. Police are also reviewing surveillance footage from the area around the scene.
