A 28-year-old man with a history of serving time for theft committed several criminal offences in Olomouc over a 24-hour period. Police patrols apprehended him twice and took him to the station. However, each time they released him after carrying out the procedural steps. The investigation is now continuing with the man at liberty.
It all began on Tuesday evening after nine o'clock. A young woman reported a break-in at a building in the grounds of the Olomouc university hospital. The thief took a handbag containing personal items. Law enforcement managed to catch him near the hospital when he was attempting to get away in a Škoda Fabia. They found the stolen handbag on him. They also established that the vehicle was listed in the nationwide stolen vehicle database.
At the wheel was a man with a court-imposed driving ban. Tests moreover revealed amphetamine, methamphetamine and THC in his body. A 17-year-old girl was travelling with him in the vehicle; police had been searching for her. She had escaped from a care facility. This was disclosed by Olomouc police spokesperson Jaroslav Herzán.
After detention and completion of the procedural steps, police released the man the following afternoon. His freedom lasted only five hours. At Kosmonautů Avenue, a patrol caught him attempting to shoplift in a shop. When a 20-year-old security worker tried to stop him, the man injured him in the resulting scuffle.
According to Herzán, the perpetrator committed a series of illegal acts in quick succession – theft, driving under the influence of narcotics, assault and disorderly conduct. Due to the repeated conduct and the combination of offences, he faces a prison sentence of up to five years.
Although the man ended up in a cell for the second time that evening, he did not remain there either. Police did not request the court to impose pre-trial detention. According to the spokesman, there "was no reason found for that so far". The investigation is therefore continuing whilst the man remains at liberty.
