The Foral Police of Navarre is investigating the death of a 44-year-old woman in Arguedas as an alleged case of gender-based violence, according to El Mundo. A 43-year-old man, the victim's partner, has been detained as the suspected perpetrator of homicide in the sphere of gender-based violence after voluntarily turning himself in at Civil Guard facilities in Valtierra, a locality near the scene of the incident.
The Foral Police Command and Coordination Centre became aware of the incident through a family member of the woman, who found her dead in her home. The incident came to light on Monday afternoon, although the investigation must determine the exact time of the crime, which is thought to have occurred on Sunday night.
The suspected perpetrator presented himself at the Civil Guard barracks in Valtierra at around 17:25 hours, claiming to have assaulted his partner at the family home, according to details provided by the armed institution. Officers travelled with the detainee to the property in Arguedas, which had already been cordoned off by the Foral Police, confirming the woman's death. Shortly before 20:30 hours, the detainee was handed over to the Foral Police, who assumed the investigation in accordance with current coordination agreements.
According to initial inquiries, there were no previous reports of gender-based violence on record and the victim was not registered in the VioGén system.
The council of Arguedas, where the couple had lived for a relatively short time, condemned the murder and expressed "the deepest consternation and sorrow at this tragic event", extending "all support, affection and solidarity to the victim's family and circle". The council called for a minute's silence on Tuesday at noon in front of the Town Hall.
The Government of Navarre also joined in expressing condemnation. President María Chivite wrote on X: "Every gender-based murder is a failure of society. Not one more." First Vice-President and Minister of Presidency and Equality Javier Remírez noted that police forces are investigating the incident.
Should the case be confirmed as a gender-based murder, it would be the 20th victim so far this year in Spain, and the second in Navarre in 2026. Since 2003, the count stands at 1,361 women.
