Argos: Two police officers to testify in attempted murder investigation – 13 shell casings at scene
Two OPKE police officers who shot a 20-year-old in the head in Argos are appearing before an investigating magistrate on Friday. The young man is hospitalised on a ventilator in intensive care at KAT hospital.
Police officers to testify on Friday over Argos shooting
The two OPKE police officers who shot a 20-year-old in the head in Argos are testifying on Friday, according to In.gr. The two officers are facing charges of attempted murder with potential premeditation whilst in a calm mental state, and have been given time to present their account before the judicial authorities.
The 20-year-old is hospitalised on a ventilator in the intensive care unit at KAT in critical condition. Michalis Giannakos, president of POEDHN, stated on MEGA: "He is hospitalised at KAT in an intensive care unit, in a very critical condition. However, not brain dead, as is being said."
The incident
The episode unfolded at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday 8 July 2026, in the Pyrgela area of Argos. OPKE police from Argolida attempted to stop the 20-year-old car driver for inspection. According to an official police statement, the driver ignored stop signals, accelerated, and during his escape attempted to collide with police officers who were outside their service vehicles, as well as the patrol cars themselves.
A 35-minute pursuit followed. Eventually, the vehicle was trapped by patrol cars. The driver abandoned the car and attempted to escape by climbing over a concrete wall. At that point, two police officers deployed their service firearms, resulting in serious injury to the young man.
13 shell casings and six bullet marks
At the scene of the incident, 13 shell casings were found during a forensic inspection by authorities, a fact indicating that a burst of gunfire was unleashed. MEGA, which was present at the scene, identified six bullet marks on the concrete wall, at varying heights: at 2.5 metres, at knee height, at head height, at abdomen level, and at chest height.
The two accused police officers reportedly claim that their gunfire was warning shots, intended to intimidate and immobilise the 20-year-old. Ballistics examination is to clarify whether the shots that wounded him were direct shots or resulted from ricochet.
Air rifle and military identification
Christos Syndreveli, vice-president of POASU, stated on MEGA that "at the scene an air rifle replica was found, which has also been sent to forensic laboratories." According to the POEDHN president, the 20-year-old was carrying military identification around his neck and was dressed in swimming shorts.
The wounded man was initially transferred to Argos Hospital, subsequently moved to the emergency department at Thriasio Hospital, where he underwent surgery, and from there to KAT, where he is hospitalised in intensive care. The case is at the pre-investigation stage, with ballistics examination expected to provide critical answers.
