Results from forensic laboratory examinations in the double homicide in Aigion do not incriminate the 65-year-old Italian man being held in connection with the case, according to reports from the newspaper Naftemporiki.

No blood was detected on the arrested man's clothing. At the same time, specialists found no trace of gunpowder residue on his hands. Nor were his fingerprints found on the gun or blade used during the two killings.

Furthermore, no genetic material linking the suspect was isolated from the fingernails of the 54-year-old woman found dead. The same applies to his own fingernails. The twenty-centimetre-long blade found next to the body of the unfortunate mother bore none of his fingerprints — something police had predicted from the outset.

Prosecutors believe the perpetrator deliberately left both the blade and the revolver-type gun — with which the woman's 26-year-old son was executed with a shot to the head — at the scene of the killing, in an attempt to stage a confrontation between mother and son. However, officers rule out the possibility that the woman shot her son and then stabbed herself over twenty times with a knife.

The elderly man remains in pre-trial custody following the relevant decision by the investigating magistrate and prosecutor. He continues to claim he has no connection to the events. For his defence, he has hired a distinguished geneticist who has previously helped clarify significant cases. This specialist will monitor further analyses using modern technological tools.

The new laboratory findings are being examined with caution by investigating magistrates, whilst the pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
