The Mixed Jury Court of Rhodes found a 42-year-old man guilty of aggravated robbery and attempted manslaughter against a 58-year-old homeless man, imposing a total prison sentence of 17 years and a fine of 5,000 euros. The appeal does not have suspensive effect, according to Dikastiko.gr.

The sentence and the court's decision

The court, accepting the independent arguments of the defence counsel, converted the charge of robbery to aggravated robbery without particular severity, imposing a prison sentence of 10 years. For attempted manslaughter, the 42-year-old was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment. With the merger of sentences, the total conviction amounts to 17 years, accompanied by a fine of 5,000 euros, according to information from rodiaki.gr as reported by Dikastiko.gr.

The incident of 5 June 2025

In the early morning hours of 5 June 2025, on a central street of the city of Rhodes, the 42-year-old attacked a 58-year-old homeless man. He struck him on the head with his hands, wrapped a shoelace around his neck in an attempt to strangle him, and subsequently took a mobile phone worth 100 euros.

That same afternoon, the 58-year-old went to the Subdivision for Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes in Rhodes and reported the robbery. Police officers located and arrested the 42-year-old immediately. On 10 June 2025, the defendant, accompanied by his lawyer Giorgos Lampadakis, gave his defence statement before the investigating judge following the initiation of criminal prosecution at felony level.

The defendant's defence

According to information, the 42-year-old denied the charge. He claimed that the 58-year-old had lost a small bag and had promised him 100 euros if he found it. According to his account, on 5 June 2025 he encountered him by chance and asked him for the money. When the 58-year-old refused, the 42-year-old stated that he "lost his temper" and gave him two or three slaps. He categorically rejected the allegation that he attempted to strangle him with a shoelace, also noting that there was a witness to the incident.

Connection to the Karyotis murder case

The 42-year-old faces a second serious legal proceeding. Next month he is to stand trial before the Mixed Jury Court of Kos for the murder of 75-year-old Giorgos Karyotis, who was found dead inside his home in the Old Town of Rhodes. The 42-year-old is the victim's nephew and was arrested in June 2025 as an accomplice in the murder.

In the same case, Karyotis's son has already been convicted, to whom the Mixed Jury Court of Kos imposed a sentence of life imprisonment.
