Two police officers from the Argolida Crime Prevention and Suppression Unit (OPKE) face serious charges following an incident that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, 8 July 2026 in Argos. The police officers opened fire during a vehicle pursuit, resulting in the serious head injury of a 20-year-old driver.
The incident began when members of the Crime Prevention and Suppression Unit attempted to stop a vehicle in the area. The driver did not comply with the police officers' signals, accelerated and attempted to evade the check. During his flight, the young man drove in a dangerous manner, and collided with police vehicles as well.
Eventually the car was immobilised. The 20-year-old abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, climbing over a concrete wall. At that moment, the two police officers made use of their service weapons.
The injured party was initially transferred to Argos Hospital, then to the emergency department of Thriasio Hospital and finally admitted to the intensive care unit of KAT, where he is hospitalised intubated in critical condition.
An air pistol was found in his possession, which was handed over for laboratory examination. Thirteen cartridge cases were found at the scene of the incident. Ballistic investigation will shed light on whether the shots were fired into the air or direct fire.
The police officers involved were arrested at the scene. A case file was formed against them for attempted manslaughter with possible intent in a calm mental state, violation of firearms legislation and grievous bodily harm. A disciplinary investigation is also being conducted in parallel.
