Employment contract suspended following lecturer Alexandru Toader's remand in custody
The "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iași announced on Saturday evening the suspension of the employment contract of Alexandru Toader, lecturer at the Faculty of Law, after judges at the Iași Court of Appeal ordered his remand in custody for 30 days, according to hotnews.ro.
Alexandru Toader is the son of former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader. He is under investigation for rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and abuse of office for sexual purposes against two students. Detained on Friday by prosecutors at the office of the Iași Court of Appeal, the remand in custody decision was handed down on Saturday morning.
"Given today's court decision regarding remand in custody, it must be clarified that such a situation automatically triggers the suspension of the employment contract. Consequently, a meeting of the Faculty of Law Council has been scheduled for Monday morning, during which measures will be identified that must be implemented immediately so that teaching activity is not negatively affected", the university leadership stated.
The institution clarified that it respects the presumption of innocence and will not comment on aspects under criminal investigation, whilst reaffirming its "firm" commitment to university ethics standards. The leadership urged students to report any violations, including those related to sexual harassment.
The two students claim they were approached by lecturer Toader after they failed the exam in the first session. One of the young women told journalists from Reporter de Iași that she yielded to his advances and engaged in sexual relations with him, the first time in the office at the faculty, and the second time at the notary office that Alexandru Toader owns in the centre of Iași.
"If you want to continue in this career, there are some sacrifices to be made. Besides, you can't learn anything anyway, you're emotional, you're too emotional, you even do therapy about this stuff. But why pay for therapy? The solution is to have sex with me", the student recounted how she was approached by the lecturer.
The young woman subsequently withdrew from the Faculty of Law and is currently completing a different university specialisation. The two victims claim they are not the only ones and that there may be similar cases within the faculty.
The investigation was launched last autumn, following an article published by Reporter de Iași. Tudorel Toader, the former Justice Minister, wrote on Facebook on Friday that the entire situation would have been orchestrated by a lawyer with criminal cases, who sought in this way to "ease" her legal situation.
