Extradition proceedings against former Socialist politician launched late
György Fürst, who received six and a half years imprisonment in the parking mafia case, left Hungary last year and went into hiding in Israel to escape his sentence. According to information from 24.hu, Hungarian authorities only submitted an official request to the Jewish state on the last day of the then justice minister, following the governing party's electoral defeat.
The news portal made enquiries of the ministry several times after the incident last year, asking whether they would take the necessary steps to bring the fugitive back home. They did not receive any information at that time. Another media outlet also questioned Gergely Gulyás at a Government press briefing; the then head of the ministry did not provide a substantive answer as to how Fürst was able to leave the country. However, he promised that the justice system would do everything to enforce the ruling. He remained silent on the extradition request.
After the elections, 24.hu approached the ministry again. The ministry, now headed by Márta Görög, then announced that extradition proceedings had been initiated.
