A priest from Kiskunfélegyháza has been sentenced to nine years in prison for committing sexual abuse against four underage victims, according to Index.

According to the Bács-Kiskun County Prosecutor's Office, the victims were all minors at the time of the offences, with one of them younger than 14 years old. The children regularly met with the defendant and regarded him as their spiritual guide and confidant.

The court determined that the man did not employ physical violence or threats. He exploited the established relationship of trust to make sexual advances. An aggravating factor was that in each case he continued the conduct over an extended period of time.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court decided that the defendant would not be eligible for conditional release. His detention was also upheld. The trial was held behind closed doors. The sentence is first-instance and therefore is not yet final.

The charges were brought by the county prosecutor's office.
