Law enforcement authorities took Endre Kónya into custody at his residence on Friday morning, the former deputy director of the Bicske children's home. According to the suspicion, he incited someone to commit perjury – reported HVG.
Botond Fülöp, who became known under the pseudonym Vidéki Prókátor (Rural Prosecutor), warned that if he is convicted in the new case, he could face serious consequences. Kónya may have come under fresh suspicion whilst in the probation period of his previous sentence, which was suspended on grounds of clemency and runs until spring 2028. In such cases, he would not only have to serve the new sentence but also complete the remainder of the prison term remitted by the presidential pardon.
Kónya was sentenced to three years and four months in final judgment in the summer of 2021. He was found guilty of attempted coercion as an accomplice: he helped his superior, the director, to cover up sexual abuse. He tried to persuade the child victims to withdraw their incriminating statements.
The president granted him clemency in the spring of 2023. This decision subsequently led to the resignation of the head of state. A Reformed church leader, Zoltán Balog, acted as intermediary in the clemency proceedings.
Following the Bicske children's home case, the government appointed a special prime ministerial commissioner, removed several child protection leaders from their posts, and promised financial compensation to the victims.
