Attempted femicide in Vicenza

A 35-year-old man was arrested on the morning of Thursday, 5 November at his home in Castelfranco Veneto on suspicion of attempted murder. According to ilgiornaledivicenza.it, the 35-year-old Younes Nafaa, a barber of Moroccan origin, attacked his 49-year-old partner of Croatian origin with a folding knife in the San Pio X district of Vicenza. The victim is hospitalised at San Bortolo Hospital in Vicenza in critical condition.

The assault took place during the night between Wednesday and Thursday in an apartment. According to investigators' reconstruction, during a violent argument that broke out over reasons still under investigation, the man grabbed the knife initially against the partner's son. The young man managed to flee into the street and called for help, while the attacker pursued him for a short distance before returning to the apartment.

Barricaded in the house, the woman then opened the door hoping to calm the situation. It was then that the man struck her first with punches and then with several stab wounds to the face and arms. The victim was unable to defend herself and suffered deep wounds, remaining on the ground in a pool of blood. After the assault, Nafaa left and walked to Vicenza railway station, where he stayed for several hours before boarding a train to Castelfranco, the city where he lives and works.

During his escape, the man disposed of the knife by throwing it into the gas meter housing of a nearby property, where it was later found. Once he arrived in Castelfranco, he went to his home.

Following the alarm raised by the victim's son, law enforcement identified the attacker and his address. On Thursday morning they carried out a search operation, during which they seized a leather jacket with possible traces of blood, a mobile phone, and a railway ticket for the journey to Castelfranco. The arrested man was transferred to Treviso prison in isolation. At the subsequent hearing before the judge for preliminary investigations at Vicenza's court, the detention was validated and custody in prison was ordered.

The injuries sustained by the victim are serious. At least five stab wounds to the face caused damage to the facial nerve and a fracture of the temporal bone. The woman suffered a permanent disfigurement to her face and injuries with loss of cerebrospinal fluid. She remains hospitalised in the reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery department of San Bortolo Hospital in Vicenza in stable condition but under observation. She will need to be assessed by a specialist before discharge.
